"花蓮慈濟醫院（佛教慈濟綜合醫院）於1986年8月17日落成啟用。本著「人本醫療，尊重生命」之創院宗旨，在東臺灣承擔起守護生命、守護健康、守護愛的任務。至今已邁入第35年頭。在全球慈濟人與善心人士護持下，目前是東部唯一的醫學中心。 回首當年，由於東部醫療資源缺乏，重症病患需翻山越嶺至西部求醫，路途顛簸，寶貴的生命往往流失在長途旅程之中。證嚴上人一念悲心起，發願於貧瘠的醫療荒原興建醫院。創院過程艱辛，籌集資金與招募醫護不易，期間困頓難以言喻，尤其感恩在數十萬善心人士的愛心護持，以及全院同仁精進付出，終於從地區醫院、區域醫院，發展至今的規模，成為守護東臺灣的磐石。"
